Big Sur, CA

We reluctantly leave the good food of Monterey behind as we have reservations at the Pfeiffer Big Sur Campground.

Neither Tom nor I had been to Big Sur before, and we'd heard about the big mudslides the winter before, so we didn't really know what to expect.

It turned out that some of the campground sites were still closed and unavailable (and maybe always will be) because of the massive flood. If you look at what is left of this picnic table, you'll see the new ground level is about two feet higher, up to the bench. Without having these reference points, you wouldn't know that the land is forever changed by the series of storms and the flood.

The drive had spectacular ocean views, but our campground was inland and forested.

Our site was large, but deeply shaded. Since we were in a California state park, there was no electricity and we couldn't use our solar panels (sigh) because we had no direct sun around our site.

We took a drive down to McWay Falls

and, because the road to Pfieffer Beach was closed, we decided to drive to Andrew Molera State Beach. It seemed like the hike to the beach went on forever, but turns out it was only about half a mile.
Here's my (Wendy) wildlife photo. He was under a bridge we crossed on the way to the beach.
The Big Sur River drains here to the ocean at Molera Point
